4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, (Isa iah sent to calm the fears of the
king of Ju dah) nei ther be faint hearted for the two tails of these smok ing fire brands, for the
fierce an ger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.

5 Be cause Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil coun sel against thee,
                       say ing,

6 Let us go up against Ju dah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a
king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:

7 Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, nei ther shall it come to pass (the de feat of Ju -

8 For the head of Syria is Da mas cus, and the head of Da mas cus is Rezin; and within

9 And the head of Ephraim is Sa maria, and the head of Sa maria is Remaliah's son. If ye will
not be lieve, surely ye shall not be es tab lished.

10 Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying,

11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; (Ahaz is asked to ask for a sign) ask it ei ther in
the depth, or in the height above.

12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, nei ther will I tempt the LORD.

13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house of Da vid; (Ahaz is of the house of Da vid) Is it a
small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

14 There fore the Lord him self shall give you (Ahaz) a sign; Be hold, a vir gin shall con ceive,
and bear a son, and shall call his name Im man uel.

(The birth -- or the name -- was to be a sign to Ahaz. This could n't pos si bly be the birth
of Mes siah, since it was hun dreds of years later, long af ter Ahaz had died! A "sign" to a dead

15 But ter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to re fuse the evil, and choose the good.

16 For be fore the child shall know to re fuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou
abhorrest shall be for saken of both her kings. (those united against Ju dah)
